Festival islamico de Mértola

20. Mai 2007

The walled town of Mértola is set on rocky hills, high above a river. The city is full of islamic traces which have been left centuries ago. Every two years Mértola offers an „islamic festival“ to which we went yesterday. First we walked through a crowded basar, where you could buy food, clothes, shoes, jewelery, etc. Most of the vendors were Spanish, so at last I could try to bargain. Then we relaxed in an arabic tent near Mértola´s castle, where a veiled woman told us not to step on the carpet with shoes, as this was the place where they prayed.

After having struggled our way to some cheap and greasy food, we went to a performance of an, let´s say, islamic rock band. Nicely speaking the music was „interesting“, but what I really liked was the belly dancer and the portuguese performer. Ok, making fotos at night is still something I can work on. ;-)
